Roulette City Round 3 Pencils (pt 2)

The next three pages in the lineup for the Roulette City Original Character Tournament.  Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to finish inking any pages yet in between schoolwork (plus I've been having some troubles with the page I am trying to ink), so this is all there is so far.

The designs of the opponent characters belong to my artistic opponent Neilak20, and all my finished work for this tournament can be found in this folder in my deviantART gallery.

Roulette City Round 3 Pencils (pt 1)

I finally managed to finish up the first three pages of my round 3 entry in the Roulette City Original Character Tournament on deviantART, just in time for my opponent Neilak20 to post finished versions of her cover image and first page of her round entry, as can be seen here.  Apparently I've got to REALLY pick up the pace now.  In between schoolwork, of course.

As always, all of my completed work for this tournament can be found in this folder of my deviantART gallery.

52 Character Redesigns

So one of the Sequential Art challenges for Generate (SCAD-Atlanta's expanded version of the 24-hour comic challenge) this year was to redesign 52 DC Comics characters, in full color, within the allotted 24-hour time period.  Of course I couldn't refuse.  (Though after staying awake for 30 consecutive hours—about 6 AM on Friday until about 12 PM on Saturday—part of me wishes I had...)  I mostly picked more obscure characters, second-stringers through to the bottom line of "characters whose existence you've forgotten because they never show up in anything", since I think the designs of the most prominent characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman et al are so fantastically solid that I couldn't possibly redesign them better.  Plus, it's the less prominent characters who often go through the most and/or most strikingly different costume changes, so I had a lot of fun material to work with.

So here are the designs, in the order in which I finished them (click to enlarge):

Technically I wound up drawing a few more than 52 characters, since I sometimes added in a support character (like Skeets with Booster Gold) and counted Más and Menos as one character, but since in the former instance I did little to no redesigning of the support characters and in the latter instance both characters wear exactly the same costume with very little variation, I feel like the difference is negligible.

Also, in order to have some mental context for the redesigns, while doing these I pretended that the "New 52 Reboot" actually wound up being set a few months after the events of the most recent comics, although the timeline would still be skewed a bit (compressing long stretches of comic time into shorter ones, such as in the new Batgirl title where Barbara's time in the wheelchair was condensed from 20 years to 3), but overall with the intent of kickstarting a new, brighter, fresher-faced, somewhat more lighthearted DC Universe.  As well, to inspire/rationalize a few of the designs, I came up with a few mental backstories as to why certain characters assumed certain identities or are apparently unencumbered by canon problems (such as why Barbara's got the use of her legs, and why Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man and Ted Kord/Blue Beetle are no longer dead), though explaining those would definitely make this post much longer than it needs to be and would just make me sad that those types of things aren't happening in the actual canon.

Anyway. Hope you enjoy!

(These designs have also been posted at my deviantART account as one large image, with a few additional notes in the artist's comments, as The Newer, BETTER 52).
